overheard conversations: a vicious cycle
Guy 1: If the first rule of fight club is that you don't talk about fight club, then aren't you breaking the first rule when you talk about the rules of fight club? You can't even talk about the rules without breaking the rules.
Guy 2: Dude, I think it's implied.

I think I channeled all of my school stress and emotions into Downton tonight. I definitely cried when Mr. Mason “adopted” Daisy and then again when Matthew proposed to Mary.  I didn’t use to be this way, I’m just getting super emotional in my mid-twenties.  Besides that it was perfection… and give Maggie Smith all of the awards… for everything. PS...

It's Sunday children...
and Downton is on for two glorious hours tonight. Conversely, after PBS airs the Christmas special next week we’ll be Downton-less again.

I'm reflective like a mirror.
Well, for better or worse my PACT assessment has been submitted. Naturally, I don’t feel that it’s my best work, but after 20-30 pages of commentary and reflection I don’t think that anyone could feel good about it!  I would really appreciate your prayers, good vibes, extra good karma, or whatever niceties you’ve got to spare because successfully completing this student...

Things Your Teacher Prep Program Probably Doesn't...
Always include a legality clause. As in… When using school computers to search the internet, do not search or comparison shop for illicit goods or activities.  Today I conducted a comparison shopping activity for my economics class. The assignment was to comparison shop for something that you are in the market to buy… like laptops or shoes. What is more disturbing: That some of my students...

Tennessee is trying to pass a bill that makes it... →
thingssheloves: Huffington Post Article on the Subject Here’s a blog from The Tennessean. Here’s the bill. It basically reduces bullying to physical harm and the vague and subjective statement of “reasonable fear.”

I am, in fact, still alive in the event that there was question after my last text post in which I was having a meltdown. This past week was just beyond horrible and I couldn’t get my crap together to save my life. I’m still kind of feeling that way, but I’m choosing to believe that this coming week will be better. Besides, Downton is on tonight and no one could possibly be sad...

My family are all on their way to eat at the Loveless Cafe and I am beginning my ninth hour sitting here at my desk going over tomorrow’s lesson plan, writing a *%#^(*! paper, and working on this stupid PACT with no end in sight.  Class for the next three nights and a peer critique on Thursday night as well. I’ve already had one emotional meltdown today and I’m fighting having...

saturday night will commence as follows...
PJs and glasses on Finally forcing myself to sit down and write a paper and work on the PACT (Performance Assessment for California Teachers) since the deadline is looming in 13 days. Drinking champagne from a scooby-doo glass like a boss. Listening to a playlist of catchy and/or trashy dance songs. As Pink says, “Don’t get fancy, keep it dancey.”

back to school
I returned to student teaching last Wednesday for staff development day, during which I spent nearly seven hours sitting on a plastic chair in the windowless, fluorescent-lit LGI (large group instruction) room. I also came to discover that I am the only female in an all male social studies department (advantage: no emotion-centric department meetings; disadvantage: endless conversations about...

– Shauna Niequest  - RELEVANT Magazine - 11 Things to Know at 25(ish) Don’t be like that. Don’t get stuck. Move, travel, take a class, take a risk. The Little Things
Today I stopped by the middle school to see my first and favorite students before break. I planned it so I could see both 7th and 1st period classes (1st is also advisory so they return at the end of the day). The first student I saw ran to hug me and proclaimed, “Ms. G! You’re the best Christmas present ever!”  Fifty kids all wanting to fill me in on everything they’ve...
